Elevation Certificate Grant Under the Code Enforcement Grant Program

Reimbursements for Flood Elevation Certificates in the amount of $125 per certificate was added as an eligible activity to the Code Enforcement Grant Program for qualified homeowners.

Handyman Program

This program can install handrails in bathrooms, hang pictures, install light fixtures, unclog drains, fix leaky faucets, fix mail boxes, fencing, lock sets and dead bolts, broken glass repairs, storm door repairs, smoke detectors, and many more.  *No major roofing, electrical or plumbing work.  **Please call #343-1611 to see if a job can be done that is not listed.

The program provides funds for repairs for structural issues, mechanical repairs (heating, electric, plumbing, etc.), energy conservation, lead safe work activities and health and safety.  Repairs are not allowed for the purposes of remodeling.

Mobile homes on owner's land are eligible.

First Time Homebuyer Program

In partnership with USDA-Rural Development.  Low interest rate loan for income eligible families who are first time homebuyers with an acceptable credit history who wish to purchase in specific geographic locations.

WeatherizationAn energy audit is completed and testing is done on all fuel burning appliances.  Services include basic weatherization, hot water tanks (repair/replace), roofs, electrical work, insulation (high priority), weather-stripping, carbon monoxide and smoke alarms can be provided.  Energy conservation is a focus.  Weatherization focuses on reducing a family's energy burden and ensures the home is free of carbon monoxide.

RESTORE

(Residential Emergency Services to Offer Repairs to the Elderly)

Can repair issues that pose a risk to the health or safety of a low-income, elderly homeowner including:  structural repairs like roofs, deteriorated steps, porches and foundations; electrical, heating (furnace), water and septic, plumbing and accessibility measures.

Rural Housing Repair and Rehab Grants

USDA Rural Development has subsidized mortgages to finance the purchase of a home, for low income households, they also guarantee bank loans for moderate income buyers.  They have 1% loans up to $20,000 to do most home repairs for very low income owner occupied households and they can do lifetime grants up to $7,500 to help seniors do health and safety of accessibility repairs to their owner occupied homes.

Genesee Home Rehab V

Owner Occupied Rehabilitation Program

Helps single family home owners pay for necessary home repairs including but not limited to repairing or replacing major housing systems in danger of failure.  Also, essential or energy related repairs or improvements (includes furnace repairs) are eligible.  Making improvements necessary to permit use by persons with disabilities.  Rehabilitating housing to meet Housing Quality Standards.  Lead-based paint abatement.  Cosmetic repairs are not eligible.  Duplexes are not eligible.

Livingston-Genesee Access to Home II ProgramProvides no-interest, forgivable loans for accessibility adaptations to income-qualified owners of single family, owner-occupied homes.  Purpose:  1)  enable persons with disabilities to stay in their home 2)  To make it possible for a person to return home from the nursing home or other institutional living.  Forgivable loans are awarded on a first-come first-served basis.  The grant is a 5 year deferred forgivable loan encumbered by a Promissory Note and Mortgage.  No payments are required provided the owner maintains the home as their primary residence for 5 years or repay all grant funds received.

Referrals can be made through Genesee County Office for the Aging for Genesee County residents age 60 and over or permanently disabled.  For clients with high energy usage for electric.

 

No-cost energy services for income-qualified households.  Program may replace old, inefficient appliances, install high-efficiency lighting, offers tips on how to save energy and in limited situations may install insulation and other home efficiency measures.  Focuses on health and safety measures too.

Assisted Home Performance with Energy Star

Reduces energy costs of low and moderate income households by providing affordable energy efficient improvements to households that are not eligible for the federally funded Weatherization Program.  Assisted Home Performance with Energy Star covers up to 50% of the cost of energy efficiency improvements, up to a maximum of $5,000 per household.  There are assistance programs for 2-4 unit properties as well.

Home Performance with Energy StarFinancing Options:  NYSERDA offers low interest rate loans through Energy Finance Solutions.  Also, Energy $mart Loans are offered through a number of participating New York State Financial Institutions.  If you choose not to use either ENERGY STAR Financing or the New York Energy $mart Loan Fund, you may be eligible to receive 10% of the cost of eligible energy efficiency improvements, up to a maximum incentive of $3,000, directly from the program.
