Flood Watch Issued for Genesee County including Batavia until March 15 at 8:00 AM

Report ice jamming in the Tonawanda Creek by calling 911

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch through March 15 at 8:00 AM for Western New York to include Genesee County and Batavia.  The primary cause for the watch is an Ice Jam Flooding threat this weekend.  This week's thaw is causing ice to break up along the Tonawanda and other local creeks.  Larger chunks of ice could jam portions of the creeks and result in flooding.  Any rainfall in the area Friday and Saturday will increase the runoff into streams and increase the flood threat.

What to do:

If you notice an ice jam in the Tonawanda Creek, call 911 to report

Stay away from flooded streets - Do not attempt to drive on streets that are flooded

Stay away from the Creek - as snow melts, water movement can become rapid and may produce dangerous conditions

Realtime Tonawanda Creek levels can be accessed here.

Note that current and predicted levels do not take ice jamming into consideration.

A flood watch means that that conditions are favorable for flooding.
